Woman, 76, was killed by a solar panel that exploded from a Brooklyn roof over Easter in New York City

A powerful storm sweeping through the region claimed one life in New York City on Monday when a flying solar panel hit a 76-year-old woman in the head while she was walking in Brooklyn.

A strong gust of wind caused the 41-by-87-inch sign to detach from a rooftop garage in an outdoor parking lot on Ocean Parkway near Brighton Beach Boulevard in West Brighton, according to the NYPD and the city Department of Buildings.

The painting was swept away by the wind and flew about 20 feet, hitting Lyudmila Brown, who lived about five blocks away and happened to be walking by, cops and building officials said.

Police said the collision caused the woman to fall to the ground, unconscious and unresponsive.

She was taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Police said her death was considered a freak accident.

It came as a wind advisory was in effect citywide, with the National Weather Service warning of 20 to 30 mph winds with gusts up to 45 mph that could “cause flying debris” and “turn unsecured objects into projectiles.”

Meanwhile, DOB worked with the MTA to close one of the entrances to the nearby above-ground Ocean Parkway Q train station “in the interest of public safety,” officials said.

A partial evacuation order has also been issued for the parking lot below the solar panel installation, the department said.

Officials said “additional enforcement actions” await the results of the ongoing DOB investigation.
