William Zepeda is about to capture the WBC gold after Shakur Stripped

William Zepeda finds himself sitting in the Catbird seat for the light WBC title blank after the sanctioning body officially removed Shakur Stevenson today.

This comes on Shakur’s heels jumping up to 140 lbs to capture a WBO title from Teofimo Lopez last Saturday. While Stevenson had the option to hold on to his 135 lbs strap, he would have asked for a sanction fee of $ 100,000 that he chose not to pay.

Although Shakur went to social media to complain about the decision, his eyes seemed stable on heavier weight classes. Immediately after his unanimous decision winning over Lopez, he was already in the circle chatting with Conor Benn about possible movement to 147. He mentioned a rehydration clause for that one, showing that he was more interested in new challenges than looking back on the light ranks.

This opens the door wide to Zepeda. The WBL is expected to order a fight between him and the acting champion Jadier Herrera to fill the vacancy. Zepeda, now 33-1, proved its worth last July when Shakur pushed to the fullest at Louis Armstrong Stadium. In that battle, Zepeda ignored Shakur’s injection and forced a cruel interior brawl, punishing the New Jersey native with a steady body work in a competition that many fans thought it was too close to call.

While Herrera brings a serious power from the stance of the de paw, it has not dealt with the relentless type and weight that Zepeda carries to the ring. If this battle is made, Zepeda finally has a huge opportunity to wrap that green belt around its waist.

It’s going to be difficult for Jadier to catch Zepeda off for 12 rounds of relentless weight. It’s not going to slow down, and will continue to throw more than 100 punches per round for as long as the battle goes. Shakur managed to resist him, but pulled enough shots to prevent them from being prevented.
