Why Aaron Glenn is still confident in Justin Fields as Jets QB

Aaron Glenn acknowledged the obvious on Monday: Justin Fields He took a step back in Sunday’s loss to the Broncos.

But the Jets’ first-year head coach isn’t ready to quit over one bad performance, ugly as it may be.

“When you look at what Justin did, and the games he played, listen, I didn’t think he was bad at all. I actually thought he did some good things in those four games,” Glenn said. “In this fifth game, he took a step back and I’m with you guys 100 percent, and we can’t have that. We’ve got to get better at that and he knows that.”

“He knows that better than anyone, so I don’t think you just try to put a player on the bench after he had a really bad game, because I thought he played well in the other games.”

Fields threw for just 45 yards, completing 9 of 17, In a 13-11 loss to the Broncos.

The Jets ended up netting 10 yards, The worst mark in franchise history.

Fields, who ranked 29th out of 33 qualifying passers in total QBR, was sacked nine times, though a large portion of that was the result of him holding onto the ball too long.

Despite having a capable backup in Tyrod Taylor, Glenn chose not to go for him.

He believes this would set a bad precedent.

“Well, I think that’s always a problem, because now you start bringing in the dynamic of a guy where the quarterback is always thinking, ‘Am I going to get drafted if things don’t go well?'” Glenn said. “And again, just like I said before, I think there’s a number of things that go into it.”

Glenn felt the offensive struggles weren’t just on the fields.

The coach noted that the Jets have to block better and the receivers have to be open as well.

Glenn said Fields has to get rid of the ball faster.

Center Josh Myers came out to support Fields regarding his number of sacks and his offense overall.

“I’ve played a lot of snaps with him and he’s a great football player, leader and quarterback,” Myers said. “We’ve got to do a better job around him, just talking about the offensive line. We’ve got to give him time and let him get his reads and all that stuff. He’s going to be OK. He’s seen adversity and I think you’re going to see a bounce-back performance from him.”

Right now, the Jets just need a victory.

They are the only winless team in the league at 0-6, and fans are tired of constantly losing.

Glenn believes he will eventually convert.

“Obviously everyone wants to make sure they have a winning record, but that’s the thing that hasn’t been heard from the beginning: We’re not talking about the (Super Bowl), we’re trying to build a foundation, make sure we’re winning consistently,” Glenn said. “To win consistently, I know this: There has to be improvement, and for me, I saw improvement in that game. Does that mean we’re going to continue with this agreement to win every one of our games? No, but I know this: It gives us a better chance to win.”
