Stevenson responds to Haney’s call with caution

Shakur Stevenson has just sent a cold reminder to Devin Haney after Haney jumped on social media to call Shakur and his “little brother,” Keyshawn Davis.

Instead of being pulled into the back and forth, Stevenson keep his reply In short and cryptic: “Be careful what you ask for, things may happen.”

It was not exactly a signed contract, but it was certainly not “no” either. By ignoring the mention of Keyswein Davis and avoiding any talk of dates, Shakur left the warning hanging there. He answered the comment without inviting Haney to the negotiation board. It was a deliberate move to keep its position unchanged while ensuring that the message was received high and clear.

The timing is perfect for a huge battle to emerge, especially as Shakur is currently without an opponent following his dominant victory over Teofimo Lopez last Saturday night.

While there was a fight with Conor Benn on the table for a short time, those discussions did not go anywhere once Stevenson refused to proceed with a rehydration clause. That specific demand had effectively removed the equation for the time being. This leaves Shakur’s schedule very vulnerable to another big name to step up if the terms are right.

If this battle really happens, don’t expect to repeat a Teofimo masterclass. Haney will not let Shakur sit on the outside and choose it differently as Lopez did. Instead, he uses his reach and a small injection to keep opponents to the end of his punch. Haney doesn’t matter a boring battle. He will burn through rounds happy without trading, using his range to keep things quiet and organized until his opponent becomes frustrated.

That patient approach is exactly what complicates things to Shakur. Haney is by far winning rounds, which imposes a heavy burden on his opponent to create an offense without being caught. If this conversation becomes a reality, the result is likely to depend on who is willing to receive that tactical pressure and maintain it over twelve rounds of mental warfare.
