Ski jumping: Wada responds to gender injection claims

The World Anti-Doping Agency may investigate male ski jumpers if they find evidence of injecting their penises to improve sports performance.

In January, the German newspaper Build, external Jumpers reported injecting their male genitalia with hyaluronic acid before being measured for their suits.

Hyaluronic acid, which is not banned in sports, can be used to increase male genital girth A centimeter or two.

This will increase the surface area of their suit during competition, which according to FIS, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, can increase their flight through the air.

“Every extra centimeter on the suit counts. If the surface area of your suit is 5% bigger, you fly further,” said FIS ski jumping men’s race director Sandro Pertile.

Asked about the claims in the build at a press conference at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Wada director general Olivier Nigli said: “I don’t know about the details of ski jumping and how it can improve performance.

“If something were to surface, we’d look at it and see if it’s related to doping. We’re not addressing other (non-doping) means of performance enhancement.”

Clearly amused by the question, Wada’s Polish president, Witold Banka, joked: “Ski jumping is very popular in Poland so I promise you I’m going to watch it.”

FIS communications director Bruno Sassi told BBC Sport: “There is no indication, let alone evidence, that any competitor has ever used hyaluronic acid injections to try to gain a competitive advantage.”
