Shakur Stevenson is no longer the WTG lightweight world champion.

The 28 -year -old from Newark won a WBC empty strap back in November 2023 with a victory over Edwin de Los Santos. Although he became a champion in a third division that evening, his performance was widely criticized as too much-security.

In his first defense, the only battle he had in 2024, Stevenson hosted a similar show against Artem Harutyunyan before stopping late substitute Josh Padley in February 2025. His stock rose significantly in taking the weight fighter William Zepeda in July, keeping the belt for the third time in a much more friendly relationship for the fans.

This last weekend, the defensive master moved to be extremely light to challenge Teofimo Lopez, winning a round but one on the scorecards in a truly elite performance.

Although his next movement is undecided – he has been discussing yet another jump to compete for welter weight – what is clearly no longer will not defend the WBC Belt at 135 lbs. The sanction body published the following statement today:

“On January 31, 2026, WTG world lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson gave a great performance to defeat the super lightweight champion of the WBO Teofimo López world. Mayweather, Manny Pacence, Telovaro and Cane

“Throughout his career, champion Stevenson has maintained a historic and highly successful relationship with the Books Council. His ascent began in January 2019, when he captured the title of the CLLC Continental Americas; marking the start of a career that was supposed to be a grandeur.

“In 2022, Stevenson confirmed his elite status by defeating Oscar Valdez to become the Great Featherweight Champion. Subsequently, in 2023, he moved to the light section to claim the green and gold belt; a title that defended with pride and technical mastery on three consecutive occasions.

“In light of the fact that the Stevenson champion is now a great light weight world champion who reigns and is consistent with WLC’s rules and regulations, the WBC has declared its light world title empty.

“WLGC wishes to continued success for champion Stevenson in all its future efforts, both inside and outside the area.

“WBL will provide more information on the process to crown a new lightweight world champion in the near future.”

Stevenson may consider sticking at 140 lbs to protect its newly earned WBO strap, although it seems more focused on big names rather than mandadols. After the fighting, as well as targeting Conor Benn on 147, he has named Isaac Cruz as a potential opponent, while also saying he would face Devin Hanyy.

Update: Stevenson has responded to the ruling with some harsh words to the Books Council.
