The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office says 38 people who demonstrated outside the Whipple building Sunday morning were arrested and released, with one person facing a riot charge and jailed.
Protesters gathered at the building as part of a weeklong effort to oppose ICE’s action in the state.
The Sheriff’s Office Facebook page announced that the arrests occurred after deputies declared an unlawful assembly and issued orders for the crowd to disperse.
People blocked roads and access to local businesses, threw glass in the street and threw rocks, chunks of ice and water bottles at law enforcement, the sheriff’s office said.
“Freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are a right,” the sheriff’s office said. “The public must not be put at risk. Illegal activities, including road closures, intentionally creating risks and aggressive behavior will not be tolerated.”
