Deontay Wilder was linked with a challenge for Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight world titles but instead chose to take on Derek Chisora next and Usyk has predicted how ‘The Bronze Bomber’ will succeed against one of his toughest former opponents.
Different and out of sorts, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Wilder is out of the running when it comes to potential challengers for Usyk’s unified heavyweight world titles, having suffered four defeats in his last six bouts.
However, the pair had been involved in a conflict earlier this year, until Wilder pulled out of the planned fight due to a lack of progress in negotiationsinstead accepting the opportunity to be the final opponent of Chisora’s career.
Meanwhile, Usyk has announced a shock fight with Dutch kickboxer Rico Verhoevenwho is about to challenge for the WBC heavyweight world title despite a professional boxing record of 1-0, and an official 12-year streak of inactivity.
Still, Wilder remains on Usyk’s radar and a victory over ‘Del Boy’ would give the Tuscaloosa-born former champion hope that a fight with the Ukrainian could happen soon, giving him the chance to join an elite group of two-time heavyweight managers.
When discussing a possible fight at the time between Wilder and Chisora beforewho won back in 2020, Usyk took out his former foe to come out on top.
“(Deontay Wilder vs. Derek Chisora?) Erm, Derek Chisora (wins).”
Wilder-Chisora takes place at the O2 Arena in four weeks’ timeas both men reached the landmark of 50 professional fights each.
