Luigi Mangione is fighting key evidence seized during McDonald’s arrest

Plaintiff in Luigi Mangione’s state trial is defending the search of his backpack and urging a judge to allow the evidence in his upcoming murder trial, despite the defense arguing the search was unconstitutional.
Prosecutors argued that Mangione’s Motion to Suppress Evidence A court must reject certain statements taken from his backpack and given to police because Pennsylvania authorities acted “reasonably” during the search, according to court documents obtained by Fox News.
The filing comes after three weeks of hearings in 2025, in which Mangione’s defense team The alleged murder weapon, handwritten notes and additional items seized from the accused killer’s backpack were inadmissible because they violated his constitutional rights.

However, the Manhattan district attorney’s office is insisting that Altoona officers “responded reasonably to this unexpected and alarming situation,” when they searched Mangione’s backpack and arrested him inside a rural McDonald’s, according to court filings.

“Altuna’s officials said A Search warrant As for the backpack, it thereby establishes an independent source to recover the contents of the backpack,” wrote Assistant District Attorney Joel Seideman.

The prosecutor pointed to the defense’s claim that Altoona officials did not comply New York’s Search and Seizure Lawinsisting that Pennsylvania officials were “unfamiliar” with another state’s guidelines.

“Nor could they be expected to become familiar with that body of law prior to the defendant’s arrival, which they had no way of anticipating,” Seidemann wrote.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty to both State and federal fees Stemming from the 2024 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan.

A few days later he was arrested in Altoona McDonald and extradited New York Citywhere he remains in custody awaiting trial.
Judge Gregory Caro is expected to issue a ruling on the evidence by May 18. Accordingly WABC.
