Jets stick with Justin Fields despite historically inept pitching
The statistically worst passing game in franchise history isn’t enough for Aaron Glenn to make a change at quarterback.
After the planes 13-11 loss to the Broncos on Sunday in LondonGlenn suggested that he is sticking with Justin Fields as the starting quarterback.
He even rejected the idea of Fields sitting down.
“Come on, man, what kind of question is that? Sometimes this league is (up and down). There are players who have bad games,” Glenn said. “That doesn’t mean you just sit with them. Come on, you know better than that.”
Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with $30 million guaranteed last offseason.
Glenn’s questionable challenge comes after he opened his postgame press conference saying the Jets’ passing game is “nonexistent.”
Fields completed just 9 of 17 passes for 45 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions.
He was also sent off nine times, a large number of which were as a result of holding the ball too long.
When accounting for those nine sacks, Fields and the Jets had minus-10 net receiving yards — the fewest by any team in the NFL in 27 years and the lowest in Jets history.
He also wasn’t much of a threat with his legs, scoring 31 yards.
As a team, the Jets mustered just 82 yards of offense.
“It wasn’t good enough, and it started with me,” Fields said. “I have to get the ball out. They have a good defense. They get into the backfield quickly.”
Tyrod Taylor, Fields’ reserve, began the aircraft operation 29-27 road loss to Buccaneers In the third week with Fields out with a concussion.
Taylor completed 26 of 29 passes for 197 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
The Jets also have rookie Brady Cook, who signed as an undrafted free agent last season, on the practice squad.
Right now, Glenn doesn’t seem to be thinking about making a change.
“They gave it to us offensively,” Glenn said of Sunday’s display. “We all saw that. … Our passing game was lacking. That’s something we’ve got to get better at. These guys did a really good job of pressuring the quarterback.”
