The BBC’s senior international correspondent Orla Guerin joins specialist police on a mission into Colombia’s cocaine heartland, tasked with destroying a crude cocaine lab hidden deep in the jungle.
Jungle commandos, a police unit armed by the United States and originally trained by Britain’s SAS, explore laboratories that are little more than shacks with drums of chemicals and fresh coca leaves ready to be turned into paste.
Major Cristian Sedano Diaz, a 16-year veteran of the war on drugs, told the BBC that a cocaine lab could be quickly rebuilt “in just a day”.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has claimed that his government has seized the largest amount of drugs in history, but US President Trump has criticized Colombia for not doing enough to fight the drug trade.
