I Was Denied Sick Leave Because My Boss Said It Was “Inconvenient Timing” / Bright Side

my dear The bright side,
I had surgery Scheduled for months. It wasn’t optional, and it wasn’t something I could move into. The day before my surgery, I sent a message to my manager to confirm my medical leave. Her response amazed me: “Can you postpone it? We are short-staffed.” I told her that was not possible. A hospital appointment is scheduled. She replied: “Then grab your laptop and work from home.”
I explained that I would be under anesthesia and recovering. That’s when she sent the message that pushed me over the edge: “A lot of people suffer from pain. You’re not special.” A short while later she followed up with another message:Refusal to cooperate will be observed during a recruitment crisis.
Instead of responding, I took screenshots of the conversation. I emailed it to my manager, and copied the HR section in the email. I also posted it on my public social media and wrote: “If your job requires you to postpone surgery or work under anesthesia, it may be time to rethink your ‘company culture.’”
