I Refuse to Be the Lowest Paid Person in the Company, Now Everyone Knows Why / Bright Side

Hello bright side,

My boss refused to raise my salary for 4 years in a row. “You’ll get there when you’re ready.” He said every time.

I continued to work harder. I stayed late, covered shifts, and trained new employees. I thought loyalty would be rewarded in the end.

Last month, I accidentally saw a new intern offer letter sitting on the printer. She makes $30,000 more than me. A girl fresh out of college with no experience.

I stayed calm. I didn’t say a word to anyone.

Two weeks later, my boss stormed into the office screaming. He had just found out that I had accepted a job offer from our largest competitor, and I was taking two other senior employees with me. People he couldn’t afford to lose.

He asked to know how I could do this “Do this for him” After everything he did for me. I just smiled and said: “I’m finally ready.”

Now some co-workers call me selfish, saying I should have given him a chance To match the width. Others cheer for me. My mom thinks I burned a bridge that I might need later.

My husband says I did the right thing but wonders if I should have handled it differently. I’m proud of myself, however I can’t get rid of this strange guilt. Part of me feels like I betrayed the people who were counting on me.

Have I gone too far in hiring my coworkers? Should I have confronted my manager first instead of just leaving? I really need an outside perspective here because everyone around me has a different opinion and I don’t know whose voice to trust anymore.

for you,
Nicole
