“Tron: Ares” was packed with action and nostalgia, but it wasn’t enough to draw big numbers across more than 4,000 theaters.
“It’s been difficult for this franchise to gain traction and become a mega franchise,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. He noted that the original 1982 film “Tron” initially struggled at the box office, but eventually gained great popularity.
Dergarabedian said international numbers could play a major role in a film’s profitability.
“It’s still topping the box office,” he said. “A specific release date has been chosen. All eyes are on a major Disney film that represents a huge, well-known brand that has been around for decades.”
It wasn’t the only new release that struggled to connect.

He said this month is perfect for films like “The Smashing Machine” and “After the Hunt,” which will be released on October 17, to shine in their own way.
“If you’re a movie fan, especially indie, art house and awards season, this is a great month,” he said. “Moviegoers have to accept the selective offerings on the big screen.”
