Anders Lee delivers the winner on the Clutch Islanders to continue the final tear

Anders Lee has made a career of scoring goals around the back of the net, but this goal wasn’t a typical deflection or bouncing stuffing.

The Islanders captain lowered his shoulder as he descended the right wall and swooped around a defender with his backhand, before switching to a forehand and burying the winner past Sergei Bobrovsky to lift the Islands into the ranks. Final comeback win, 5-4 Sunday night over the Panthers at UBS Arena.

“It’s great, it’s fun, that’s why we play this game,” the 35-year-old Lee said after scoring his 14th goal of the season. “It was one of those nights where pucks were tough and there weren’t a lot of opportunities, especially early, and creativity wasn’t easy to come by.

“So I felt like we got it.”

Lee has scored in each of the past three matches after a 10-game goal drought.

Veteran wing Jonathan Drouin did not play because of what coach Patrick Roy said was a lower-body injury he suffered late in Saturday’s overtime win in Columbus.

Anthony Duclair, who was a healthy scratch several times on either side of the Olympic break, replaced Drouin on the left side of the line with Cale Ritchie and Emil Heinemann.

Backup goaltender David Rittich was shaky early, but finished the game making 29 saves on 33 shots to seal the win. … Defenseman Ryan Pulock left the bench for the locker room early in the third period, but returned to the ice shortly afterward.

After playing the first two games after the break on the road, the Isles honored Olympians from both teams, including forwards Bo Horvat (Canada) and Ondrej Palat (Czech).

Florida forward Matthew Tkachuk of Team USA received a standing ovation, as did mention of the overall gold medal-winning U.S. men’s and women’s teams.

Also honored was Longtime Isles Public Relations President Kimber Auerbach, who served in that position for Team USA.
