A massive fight broke out after the Chiefs-Lions game
A fight broke out at the end of the Chiefs’ win over the Lions after Detroit defensive back Brian Branch slapped Kansas City Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.
The brawl occurred just after Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes knelt to run out the clock and players began shaking hands.
Branch walked right past Isiah Pacheco and ignored Mahomes’ handshake before confronting Smith-Schuster and slapping the Kansas City receiver.
Pacheco tried to keep Branch back after the punch, but Smith-Schuster came running back at him and tried to retaliate – leading to a massive brawl.
The situation quickly came under control as calm heads prevailed.
“I love Brian Branch, but what he did is unforgivable and will not be accepted here,” Lions coach Dan Campbell told reporters during his press conference. “This is not what we do. This is not who we are and I apologize to coach (Andy) Reid and the Chiefs and (Smith-Schuster). This is not okay. This is not what we do here and it will not be okay. He knows it, our team knows it, so, this is not what we do.”
There’s no doubt Branch will receive a call from the league about the incident, though it’s unclear who else will be reprimanded for the postgame fight.
“I mean, we’re playing the game between the sirens,” Mahomes told NBC. “They can do all the extracurricular things they want to do.”
Branch has history with the league, having been ejected last year during a game against the Packers after making a late hit on receiver Bo Melton.
He then turned on the crowd and was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Branch later apologized for his actions.
The frustration was evident for the Lions on Sunday night as they fell 30-17 to the Chiefs.
